FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Choosing your sign

Q. Will my sign be weatherproof?

A. Timber framed signs are best placed in semi-protected positions, such as verandahs or eaves. Aluminium framed signs can be placed in exterior positions. Polished glass signs, aluminium address plaques and nameplaques, and all engraved signs are suitable for exterior positions.

Q. Which type of sign is most suitable for my house?

A. This comes down to personal choice, but there are guidelines we can offer. Generally, if you have a period house with decorative features such as scrollwork or leadlight windows, we recommend the glass signs with decorative borders. Conversely, if your house is built in a contemporary style, the simpler designs work better. If your house falls somewhere in between period and contemporary, we suggest you try to match features of your home with sign elements: for example, brass fittings match gold lettering; black window frames match black sign frames, and so forth.

Q. What are framed glass signs made from?

A. We use 3mm glass laminated with long life laminates. The graphics are fused to the glass so there is no chance of water damaging the sign. The signs are framed in hardwood timber or in aluminium.

Q. How can I choose the correct sign size for the position I have in mind?

A. Here's a simple technique that we find helpful. The dimensions of each sign type are given on the ordering page. Using those measurements, you can make a paper template and use it to ascertain whether the size is appropriate for the position you have in mind.

Q. Can I order a different size than those shown?

A. To keep the cost factor as low as possible we do not make signs to size.

Q. How can I choose the colour of my sign?

A. The best way to choose the colour is to ensure that it will contrast with the background you intend to use and try to incorporate some of the colours in the external architectural features of your house such as the front door, window frames, guttering or roof tiles.

Q. How big will the lettering be?

A. The size of the lettering on the glass signs will depend on the number of letters in the name. Usually this lettering varies from 50mm down to 30mm in height. As a rough guide:

  • 30mm can be read from 15-20 metres
  • 40mm can be read from 20-25 metres
  • 50mm can be read from 25-30 metres
  • 60mm can be read from 30-35 metres
  • 80mm can be read from 35-40 metres
  • 100mm can be read from 45-50 metres

Q. Will I get a layout, "a sample of how the sign will look?"

A. The finished product will be designed to a high standard to ensure that what has been ordered looks professional. If we feel that the sign may look unattractive because of poor design and lettering choice, we will contact you before going ahead.

All signs will be designed to a high quality and standard and we guarantee you will be satisfied with the finished product.
